Nevada Intellectual Property Index — Third Quarter 2015
The number of granted Nevada patents increased 7% and the number of published Nevada patent applications increased 3%.
The number of registered Nevada trademarks increased 3% while the number of new Nevada trademark application increased 2%.
Overall the Nevada Intellectual Property Index increased 4% over the previous quarter but decreased 9% from the previous year. The modest gains in the last four quarters indicate slowly increasing spending on intellectual property in the state.
Definitions
Nevada patent applications are applications that have been filed with and published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and list either an inventor, applicant or assignee that has a Nevada address. Although most applications are published, a small percentage (about 7% nation wide) are not published for various reasons. Patent applications are generally published 18 months after the first priority date of the application. Published applications have not necessarily been examined and some applications will be abandoned after publication. Nevada patents are granted U.S. patents that list either an inventor, applicant or assignee that has a Nevada address.
A Nevada trademark application is an application that has been filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and that is owned by an entity that has a Nevada address. Once a Nevada trademark application has been examined and approved and all requirements have been satisfied, it becomes a Nevada registered trademark.
