Nevada Intellectual Property Index 2014

If we exclude copyright records, the Nevada Intellectual Property Index increased 11% in 2014. Granted patents increased 12%, published patent applications increased 18%, registered trademarks increased 6% and trademark applications increased 10%. This represents a strong gain for the State.

If we include copyright records, the Nevada Intellectual Property Index decreased 0.8%. Based on the most recent data, copyright records degreased 41% this year. However, this decrease is likely due to administrative lag. As time goes by, the copyright database is updated with additional records. Therefore, we believe that copyright records will be adjusted upward and that there will likely be an increase over 2013.

As seen in the graph above, if copyrights are excluded, the Index has steadily increased over the last five years. The Index has increased 30% since 2010 and all categories of intellectual property have increased. This indicates a healthy upward trend in Nevada’s intellectual property and economy. We believe the trend will continue in 2015.

Definitions

Nevada patent applications are applications that have been filed with and published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and list either an inventor, applicant or assignee that has a Nevada address. Although most applications are published, a small percentage (about 7% nation wide) are not published for various reasons. Patent applications are generally published 18 months after the first priority date of the application. Published applications have not necessarily been examined and some applications will be abandoned after publication. Nevada patents are granted U.S. patents that list either an inventor, applicant or assignee that has a Nevada address.

A Nevada trademark application is an application that has been filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and that is owned by an entity that has a Nevada address. Once a Nevada trademark application has been examined and approved and all requirements have been satisfied, it becomes a Nevada registered trademark.

A Nevada copyright is a copyright registration that has been filed with and approved by the U.S. Copyright Office and is owned by an entity with a Nevada address.
